The eight International Conference On Signal-Image Technology & Internet-Based Systems SITIS'12 is a forum for researchers and scientists to share work and experiences. The conference main goal is to foster an exciting and open discussion forum involving authors from different countries. The conference includes two main tracks. Internet Based Computing and Systems IBCS focuses on issues ranging from information modeling and retrieval techniques to novel concepts, architectures and methodologies for interconnecting information systems. The track on Signal & Image Technologies is aimed at recent developments in digital signal processing, evolutions in audiovisual signal processing, analysis, coding and authentication, and retrieval techniques. Two workshops from past SITIS conferences have confirmed their successes: KARE, the workshop on Knowledge Acquisition, Reuse and Evaluation, is devoted to methods and systems that assist knowledge management; workshop INTERPRET focuses on Multimedia Techniques for Augmented Reality: Presence and Emotion in Virtual Environment. We welcome several 4 workshops this year: COMI on colour and multispectral imaging, MTSK on methods, models and technology for semantic-driven knowledge building, Complex Networks and their applications, SACOM on situation aware computing and WEBDIS on web based and distributed information systems. About 270 original submissions were received from around the world. A complete reviewing process was carried out in which each paper received two or 3 reviews, some papers received up to 5 reviews. Each paper is evaluated based on relevance to track topics, scientific correctness and clarity of presentation. 135 papers were selected for presentation and publication in the conference proceedings. Our kudos go to many people who have greatly contributed to putting together a fine scientific program and exciting social events for SITIS 2012. We acknowledge the commitment and hard work of the track chairs and workshop organizers. They have kept the scientific program in focus and made the discussions interesting and valuable. We recognize the excellent job done by the program committee members and the extra reviewers. They evaluated all the papers on a very tight time schedule. We are grateful for their dedication and contributions. We could not have done it without them. More importantly, we thank the authors for submitting and trusting their work to the conference. We are grateful for the cooperation of many institutions that have provided support and assistance: the university of Bourgogne, the research institute INCAR in Naples and the national research council CNRS. We thank the General Chair, Dr Ernesto Damiani, and the program chair Dr Giuseppe De Pietro for their continuing support. We would like to express our deepest gratitude to the chair of the local organization committee, Dr Luigi Gallo, and the members of the local organization committee for their help, assistance and collaboration. They spare no effort in preparing the events and providing a friendly venue for the conference. We thank the conference secretary, expertly handled by the members of “YESMEET”, particularly Rossella Gambardella, who, with smile and determination, never failed to find appropriate solutions for many organization problems We hope that you enjoy the scientific program of SITIS 2012. Sorrento, the conference venue, is really gorgeous, we have no doubt that the participants will take a little time to walk around town and bring many fond memories back with them. We trust you enjoy all.
