The present volume stems from the international workshop The Art of Defense: Bastioned Fortifications in Central Italy (16th–17th Centuries), held at Palazzo Alberti, Florence, on 22–23 May 2025, and jointly organized by the PRIN 2022 research project “Alla moderna: Fortresses for a Prototypical Early Modern State” (CUP B53D23001780008) and The Medici Archive Project. Gathering historians, architects, and scholars of early modern culture, the meeting offered the opportunity to explore the multiple meanings and long-term implications of the bulwarked fortresses built in the Papal State and neighbouring regions between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The interdisciplinary vocation of the project found full expression in the breadth and variety of the papers presented, which reflected the richness of the perspectives brought together on this occasion. The essays are presented in both Italian and English, in keeping with the bilingual nature of the project.
