Religious cultural heritage represents the most frequent category of UNESCO site. It is configured as an element that strongly characterizes the urban and suburban landscape: if abandoned, it degrades, generating damage on multiple levels (due to increasingly high maintenance and management costs, reduced attractiveness to the location of activities and people, and other negative impacts in multiple dimensions). There is currently a need to put in place actions that aim to protect and secure historic buildings for the purpose of their protection and valorization. One of the actions that is certainly necessary to achieve the goal is monitoring the degradation situation of such buildings, with the purpose to identify threats and risks and, if possible, to indicate solutions for the elimination of the former and the reduction of the latter. According to this perspective, the aim of this paper is to illustrate a monitoring logic for the risk mitigation derived from environmental factors affecting historic buildings of special value. The first results from complementary tests (IR reflectography, thermography ...) carried out on the church of San Francesco in the historical center of Sant’Agata dei Goti, in the south Italy, we reported.
