In some cities central areas and marginal spaces coexist together, but some urban areas can be characterized by their status as exclusively fringe' areas given the marginal role they have in that they lack good communications and transport systems, as well as a reduced presence of technological resources and advanced services. In this research we would like to highlight these aspects of marginal urban areas in the Italian South with reference to a specific region, Molise, by looking at their geo-historical causes and their social-demographic and economic characteristics. We would like to survey, through a case study, the marginal urban regions and the possibility of their development. An analysis of the situation from a geo-historical perspective is made by making use of modern and contemporary sources in order to explain why urban development has not been favoured and why contemporary problems still exist

Abstract
In some cities central areas and marginal spaces coexist together, but some urban areas can be characterized by their status as exclusively fringe' areas given the marginal role they have in that they lack good communications and transport systems, as well as a reduced presence of technological resources and advanced services. In this research we would like to highlight these aspects of marginal urban areas in the Italian South with reference to a specific region, Molise, by looking at their geo-historical causes and their social-demographic and economic characteristics. We would like to survey, through a case study, the marginal urban regions and the possibility of their development. An analysis of the situation from a geo-historical perspective is made by making use of modern and contemporary sources in order to explain why urban development has not been favoured and why contemporary problems still existI documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
