Small factories and widespread rural buildings on the Italian territory very often aren’t considered as an historic architectural heritage, that could be restored and reused. However, as an heritage of the past and signs of a collective memory to pass on, they claim their importance due not only to the relationship between the factory and work, but also to the landscape in which they are inserted. The restoration project can reveal the actual intrinsic potential of these buildings, hidden by abandonment and decay, but that represent an irreplaceable opportunity for the knowledge and preservation of our material culture. The proposed rehabilitation of the Former Mill Curcio in Polla (South of Italy) is a concrete example of the above said approach, where the architectural choices and detail are constantly evaluated in contemporary times, in order to generate refunctional uses of the architectures over the time. The technological and retrofit solutions adopted would meet the design responsibility, sustainability, respect for the architecture in its double value technicalhistorical and culturalhistorical.
