Welcome to the 5th International Workshop on Intelligent Interfaces for Human-Computer Interaction (IIHCI 2012) held in conjunction with the 6th International Conference on Complex, Intelligent, and Software Intensive Systems at the San Paolo Palace Hotel, Palermo, Italy, on July 4–6, 2012. Human—computer interaction (HCI) is a multidisciplinary research area that includes understanding, designing, building, and evaluating complex interactive systems involving many people (both researchers and users) and many technologies. On the other hand, developments in software and hardware technologies are continuously driving applications that support our collaborative and communicative needs as social beings, both at work and at play. This workshop addresses a central issue of HCI in that it focuses on intelligent interfaces for human-computer interactions, which is the study and development of devices that allow users to interact with computer and automatic systems. The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers from the different fields whose work is related to intelligent interface design for HCI. This year, the program committee is proud to present a rich set of 18 contributions, selected for oral presentation. We believe all of these papers and topics will not only provide novel ideas, new results, work in progress, and state-of-the-art techniques in this field, but also stimulate future research activities in the area of human-computer interaction. The program for this workshop is the result of the hard and excellent work of many people, including authors, external reviewers, and Program Committee members. We would like to express our sincere appreciation to all of them for their cooperation in completing the workshop program under a very tight schedule. We also gratefully acknowledge the IEEE Computer Society for sponsoring the workshop. Last but not least, we are grateful to the organizers of the Sixth International Conference on Complex, Intelligent, and Software Intensive Systems for hosting the workshop; in particular, CISIS 2012 Workshop Co-Chairs Beniamino Di Martino, Hui-Huang Hsu, and Arjan Durresi, and also CISIS 2012 General Co-Chairs Leonard Barolli and Fatos Xhafa for bringing together this important event. We hope you will enjoy your participation in IIHCI and your stay in Palermo!
