Basing on the interpretation of the myth of exile offered by the poet Giuseppe Ungaretti, who was born in exile and uprooted since his birth, the essay retraces how Dante – as exul immeritus – and Petrarca – with his peculiar way to be instable, shifting and peregrinus ubique – projected themselves onto the character of Ulysses. The essay offers also an analysis of some texts of Italian literature and Italian literary criticism that result particularly significant in relation to the thematic of exile: the letter in which Petrarca expresses to Boccaccio his opinion on Dante (Familiares XXI, 15); the Parallelo tra Dante e Petrarca (Parallel between Dante and Petrarca) by Foscolo, in which the theme of exile is connected with the topos of the exiled patriot; some imagines and passages from poetry and travel proses by Ungaretti, in dialogue with ancestors like Ulisse, Enea, Didone, Dante, Petrarca, Foscolo.
