Three-dimensional narratives in the metaverse represent an innovative convergence of human creativity, artificial intelligence (AI) and immersive technologies such as virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). These narratives promote divergent thinking by allowing users to generate multiple solutions to complex problems in a dynamic, interactive environment. Through engagement with non-linear storytelling, users can explore diverse pathways and creative possibilities, enhancing cognitive flexibility. The integration of AI further amplifies this process, generating adaptive environments and characters that evolve in real-time, pushing the boundaries of creativity. Educational applications of immersive storytelling have demonstrated significant potential in enhancing creativity, problem-solving and emotional engagement. Recent research shows that VR-based narratives improve users’ imaginative capacity and learning outcomes by situating them in complex, realistic contexts. However, the absence of robust narrative structures can limit the potential of these technologies. To maximise their effectiveness, it is essential to integrate narratological theory with immersive design. Developing measurable indicators to assess the impact of 3D storytelling on learning and engagement is crucial. By blending advanced narrative techniques with technological innovation, educators and developers can create more meaningful experiences that support educational objectives, such as fostering empathy, collaboration and adaptability. Future research should focus on the long-term integration of immersive technologies in education, with attention to challenges related to accessibility and inclusivity, which are also addressed through narratives.
