Duellare in mezo Roma. La sfida Baglioni-Salviati nell'anno santo 1575

This article examines a striking episode that took place in Rome during the Holy Year of 1575: the duel between Giovan Paolo Baglioni and Antonio Salviati, fought “in the very heart of Rome” under the patronage of some of the leading figures of the aristocracy and the Sacred College. Drawing on a wide range of sources – handwritten newsletters, diplomatic correspondence, judicial records, and contemporary narrative accounts – the article reconstructs the background to the duel, its course, and its complex aftermath. The episode brings to light the tensions that permeated Roman society during the Jubilee of 1575, calling into question the historiographical image of a city that was disciplined and fully aligned with the Tridentine reform project. The duel reveals the persistence of aristocratic honour codes, the strength of factional networks, and the active role played by women and patrons in the management of noble conflicts. From this perspective, the episode invites us to reconsider the Jubilee not only as a devotional and normative framework, but also as a moment in which the frictions between ritual exceptionality and the continuity of social practices in late sixteenth-century Rome became particularly visible.

L’articolo analizza un episodio clamoroso verificatosi a Roma durante l’anno santo 1575: il duello tra Giovan Paolo Baglioni e Antonio Salviati, combattuto «in mezo Roma» con il patrocinio di alcuni fra i maggiori esponenti dell’aristocrazia e del Sacro Collegio. Attraverso un’ampia base documentaria – avvisi manoscritti, corrispondenze diplomatiche, carte giudiziarie e fonti narrative coeve – il saggio ricostruisce le premesse del duello, il suo svolgimento e le complesse conseguenze. Vengono così in luce le tensioni che attraversavano la società romana nel giubileo del 1575, mettendo in discussione l’immagine storiografica di una città disciplinata e pienamente allineata al progetto di riforma tridentina. Il duello rivela infatti la persistenza dei codici aristocratici dell’onore, la forza delle reti fazionarie e il ruolo attivo di donne e patroni nel governo dei conflitti nobiliari. In questa prospettiva, l’episodio consente di interrogare il giubileo non solo come dispositivo devozionale e normativo, ma anche come momento di rivelazione delle frizioni tra eccezionalità rituale e continuità delle pratiche sociali nell’Urbe di fine Cinquecento.
