The book offers therefore a dual perspective: a gaze into Joyce’s own acts of rewriting and an enquiry into the historical circumstances of these rewritings. Shifting its attention from an Irish to a European dimension, this study is in many respects a cultural history of Europe between the two World Wars, centered around two seminal works by James Joyce (Ulysses and Finnegans Wake); their preoccupation with language, identity and linguistics, their editorial vicissitudes and their cultural reception during Joyce’s lifetime.
