From the beginning of the twentieth century until the creation of IRI in the Italian bank-centric system a close alliance was created between the Banca Commerciale Italiana and FIAT, which led to the conclusion of excellent business both in Italy and abroad. FIAT had Credito Italiano as its reference bank, but after 1915 it maintained for years, thanks above all to the relationship of mutual esteem between Agnelli and Toeplitz, a parallel relationship with the Commerciale, maintained on a private level and capable of generating a corporate control chain in the national industrial context.
