This contribution investigates the mentions of contemporary satirical writings in the works of Sidonius Apollinaris, within the context of the broadened meaning that the word satura/ satira acquires in Late Antiquity. The satires he describes are considerably different from the classical genre in terms both of content and of metre: the author seems to have his own canon in mind when he ascribes biting verses to this genre. With the further aim of providing the reader with a definition of what Sidonius calls ‘satire’, this survey is in particular focused on the reference to Secundinus’ satires (Ep. 5.8) read in light of the renowned episode of the satire of Arles (Ep. 1.11) and of a passage of Ep. 5.17.11. Furthermore, it is argued that Carm.12 is an example of Sidonian satire, since its features match those of the other satirical works referenced by the author.

Abstract
5.17.11. Furthermore, it is argued that Carm.12 is an example of Sidonian satire, since its features match those of the other satirical works referenced by the author.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
