The purpose of this contribution is to establish, through the filter of the representation of two multicultural cities, a comparison between Emil Cioran and Carlo Michelstaedter. In parallel, but in an oxymoronic way, both thinkers transfigure urban space – respectively of exile and of birth – with existential and metaphysical meanings, articulating a dialectic that affects and problematizes the roots of the identity issue. Sibiu and Gorizia, at the same time acquired and deconstructed in their urban geography, thus rise to dimensions of the imaginary, to symbols of wounds and nostalgia, of regrets and redemptions, allowing a new look on some essential themes of two of the deepest philosophical reflections of the twentieth century, often juxtaposed but never rigorously compared.

Abstract
The purpose of this contribution is to establish, through the filter of the representation of two multicultural cities, a comparison between Emil Cioran and Carlo Michelstaedter. In parallel, but in an oxymoronic way, both thinkers transfigure urban space – respectively of exile and of birth – with existential and metaphysical meanings, articulating a dialectic that affects and problematizes the roots of the identity issue. Sibiu and Gorizia, at the same time acquired and deconstructed in their urban geography, thus rise to dimensions of the imaginary, to symbols of wounds and nostalgia, of regrets and redemptions, allowing a new look on some essential themes of two of the deepest philosophical reflections of the twentieth century, often juxtaposed but never rigorously compared.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
