Ethics, environment and health. Vegan dissent in the pandemic context. In 2021, according to the latest Eurispes Report, in Italy vegetarians (i.e. consumers who have chosen to eliminate meat and fish from their plates) and vegans (i.e. those who have decided to eliminate milk and derivatives, eggs, honey and other products of animal exploitation) would amount to a total of 8.2% of the population, thus outlining a consolidated trend. There are three main reasons for this choice: ethics, environment and health (not necessarily coexisting, but closely linked). This paper aims on the one hand to highlight the interconnections between the various drives within the vegan world and on the other hand to analyse, from a transcale perspective, the dissenting practices implemented by vegan activists against the current dominant thinking that sees animals and the environment as commodities to be exploited. The privileged context within which to read these critiques will be the current pandemic state and the links between recent global events related to public health and global deforestation hotspots.
Nel 2021, secondo l'ultimo Rapporto Eurispes, in Italia i vegetariani (cioè i consumatori che hanno scelto di eliminare carne e pesce dai loro piatti) e i vegani (cioè coloro che hanno deciso di eliminare latte e derivati, uova, miele e altri prodotti di origine animale sfruttamento) ammonterebbero complessivamente all'8,2% della popolazione, delineando così un trend consolidato. I motivi principali di questa scelta sono tre: etica, ambiente e salute (non necessariamente coesistenti, ma strettamente collegati). Questo articolo si propone da un lato di evidenziare le interconnessioni tra le varie pulsioni all'interno del mondo vegano e dall'altro di analizzare, in una prospettiva transscale, le pratiche dissidenti attuate dagli attivisti vegani contro l'attuale pensiero dominante che vede gli animali e l'ambiente come merce da sfruttare. Il contesto privilegiato all'interno del quale leggere queste critiche sarà l'attuale stato di pandemia e i collegamenti tra i recenti eventi globali relativi alla salute pubblica e gli hotspot globali della deforestazione.
