This contribution focuses on the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of local communities as a potential opportunity for intervention to promote their agency, translating into the capacity to plan territorial development in an inclusive and sustainable manner. It examines the potential contribution of the social researcher who, with appropriate methodological awareness, can support the processes through which actors become more aware and capable of responsible action/leadership. Attention is focused on the long-term research-training-intervention activity conducted by the authors working with the communities of south-eastern Salento, currently engaged in the process of establishing the territorial ecomuseum.
