The making of history in Croce is strictly connected with the literature and the tropics of narrative. Biography and historical romance are two of the main sources of its historical phantasy. Although Croce devalues the 'individual' in front of the 'Spirit', he has written many historical biographies of minor figures («uomini oscuri»): heretics, revolutionaries and exiles from the south of Italy between XVI and XX century. He also collected thousand of ‘books of lives’ in his library, revealing one possible direction of its bibliophilia. The present study try to search a ‘canon’ of its biographism sensibility.
