The 'Seismic Fund' of the Società Napoletana di Storia Patria keeps a rich documentation consisting of printed texts and manuscripts on earthquakes and volcanic eruptions of the past, the core of it is the archive of the French scientist Perrey. The unpublished letters here reproduced, transcribed, and commented reveal what happened to this instrument of historical research applied to seismology, between its sale in Dijon in 1866 and the Neapolitan purchase in 1878.
