This article examines the role of the Jewish minority in late sixteenth-century Venice, interpreting its status – neither fully Venetian nor entirely foreign – as a lens through which to reveal the complex stratification of relationships between foreigners, whether resident or in transit. It argues that this condition should not be viewed merely as an adaptation to constraints imposed from the majority, but rather as a set of opportunities arising from the interplay between the inherent indeterminacy of informal relations and the protections guaranteed by law.

Abstract
This article examines the role of the Jewish minority in late sixteenth-century Venice, interpreting its status – neither fully Venetian nor entirely foreign – as a lens through which to reveal the complex stratification of relationships between foreigners, whether resident or in transit. It argues that this condition should not be viewed merely as an adaptation to constraints imposed from the majority, but rather as a set of opportunities arising from the interplay between the inherent indeterminacy of informal relations and the protections guaranteed by law.File in questo prodotto:
