Among the most interesting political and cultural debates during the Cold War were the ones that animated Encounter, a magazine published between 1953 and 1990 by the Congress for Cultural Freedom, an international association whose aim was the defence of freedom from all forms of totalitarianism. The magazine was an editorial project that was able to gather around itself many high-profile intellectuals from very different political backgrounds. The result was the creation of a genuine intellectual community, capable of competing with the Marxist inspired one in the struggle for the supremacy of ideas. The contribution will therefore focus on the wide debate that took place within the journal in the aftermath of the destalinisation process, with special focus on any persistence of totalitarian elements in Khrushchev's USSR.

Abstract
Among the most interesting political and cultural debates during the Cold War were the ones that animated Encounter, a magazine published between 1953 and 1990 by the Congress for Cultural Freedom, an international association whose aim was the defence of freedom from all forms of totalitarianism. The magazine was an editorial project that was able to gather around itself many high-profile intellectuals from very different political backgrounds. The result was the creation of a genuine intellectual community, capable of competing with the Marxist inspired one in the struggle for the supremacy of ideas. The contribution will therefore focus on the wide debate that took place within the journal in the aftermath of the destalinisation process, with special focus on any persistence of totalitarian elements in Khrushchev's USSR.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
